A full sister to Hoarirf and Tanariri is being exercised at Ellerslie under Owner H. Rama's supervision. She is a rising two-year-old and will be prepared for racing daring the coming season.

The Romeo—Pearl de Mont filly, Roman Pearl, has been showing up in several short sprinting tasks at Ellerslie just recently. She is a member of T. R. George's team and has only been in w6rlc a short time.

Lady's Boy, who was until recently trained at Te Aroha by C. J. Carmont, Senr., will be prepared for future racing by W. Tozer, at Ellerslie. This gelding has been a good performer during the short time he has been in commission.

With ft view of contesting races confined to the hunters' dass a number of locally trained horses were out with the hounds last week. Included among them were:—Glendowie, Spalmore, Odin, Mashoor, Marita, Prince Papa and Royal Trek,

The Catmint gelding, Blue Spear, Bad a couple of starts at the Avondale meeting, and although he raced a bit on the green aide, he should be improved with the experience. Blue Spear may later on be given an opportunity to make good as a jumper.

A two-year-old brother' to Star Comet has had the name Nulli Secundus claimed for him. The Lord Quae—Salvette youngster, purchased at the Trentham bloodstock sales in January last by a patron of M. J. Carroll's stable, will race by the name of Gay Duke.

After being off the scene for some months the Spalpeen mare, Lady Passenger, went a fair race when she ran third in the Hack Hurdles at Trentham last Saturday. Lady Passenger has previously won over hurdles and should do well during the coming jumping season. ■

Theleeai owner, Mt m W. J. Ujrquhart, has recently had brokel in a twp-year-old gelding by Garlin from Blargerod. This youngster, who was bred in Australia, is' a fall brother to a good perform er in Garoo, who recently carried 0.0 to victory in the Kensington Handicap at a Sydney suburban meeting.

Daylight, who raced unsuccessfully at the Avondale fixture, is to fulfil his engagements at the Waikato meeting, which opens at Te Rapa on Saturday next. The' Day Comet gelding has not done much racing since being taken up after & lengthy spell, but should be equal to winning when the company is not too sel«act. .

Royal Duke, the winner of the Juvenile Handicap at the Marlborough meeting, held at Trentham, previously showed winning form on the same course when he annexed the Taita Handicap at the Wellington spring meeting in October last. Royal Duke, who is by Tea Tray from Persis, is a half-brother to The Fox, and Nucleus.

The < three-year-old gelding, Freeze Out, who accounted for the Novice Stakes at the Marlborough meeting, had previously been showing useful form. He ran third in the Trial Stakes at the Marlborough summer meeting and recently finished second in the Farewell Hack race on the concluding day of the Wairarapa meeting, at Easter time.

Winalot, winner of the AJ.C. St. Leger Stakes, was bought from the estate of the late H. Chisholm at auction in December last for 2100gs, says an Australian exchange. He gave his first return on theprevious Saturday, when he won the Warwick Farm Autumn Cup, the winner's portion of which amounted to about £800. In the early spring, Winalot, then in 6. Price's stable, was preferred to Trivalve for the AJ.C. Derby, and he ran his Victorian rival to half a neck. Winalot is now trained by J. W. Cook.

Tie Ellerslie trainer, J. Williamson, will ship Newbury and Rawhetu to Sydney by the Marama, which is due to sail from Auckland next Friday. Rawhetu, who has been in steady work at Ellerslie for some weeks, has previously , raced with a fair amount of success in Australia, and during the last

couple of seasons has captured , several races at Randwick, the most important being the Waverley Handicap (one mile and three-quarters) and the City Handicap (one mile and five furlongs). Newbury is a useful sort and should pay his i way in sprint races around the Sydney suburban Trainer Williameon will not go across to Australia just yet awhile and the horses will be in charge of the local horseman, E. Stanway.

The Ally by Saltash from Fairy Lass, purchased at the Sydney yearling sales jy *• Armor for 275gns, was secured for Mr. A. Lopiseon, a popular Christchurch sportsman, who has Master Clarence in A. In the list of nominations for the Egmont winter meeting, the following horses are trained in the Auckland district:—Rahepoto, Blago, Town Bank, Wenday, Segment, Pinon, Bright Comet, Luminary, Lorna Doone, Plying Juliet, Ned Kelly, Macroom, Athenry, Day Guard and Kerry Dance.

An English exchange states that there is a likelihood of a more scientific method being adopted of hoisting the winning numbers on racecourses. The arrangements are still decidedly antiquated in the Old Country, and behind colonial ideas. The new scheme is very much beter, however, and is an electrical device, whereby the judge can make the necessary numbers appear simply by pressing a button. For instance, by pushing down button No 2, that number instantaneously appears on the semaphore. Accuracy, time-saving, and labour-saving can all be claimed for the new idea.

For several years past, about this period, R. J. Mason has been making arrangements for his annual pilgrimage to Sydney with a team of horses. This year the stable shelters no rising three-year-old who looks up to the Derby standard, while there are no stars among the older horses. It may,: therefore, be concluded that Mr. 6. D. Greenwood will not be represented at Sydney meetings next spring. This does not mean that Mason will remain at home. He prefers to mias the extreme cold of the New Zealand winter, and it is probable that he will have his customary trip to Sydney, without any horses to interfere with a real holiday.
