THE GAME AT PUKEKOHE

General practice matches were played on Saturday at Pukekohe, Waluku defeated Power Board, Ramblers beat Wesley College first fifteen, and White Star juniors beat Wesley College second fifteen. At Tuakau White Star seniors defeated Tuakan seniors. > The Pukekohe Union's senior competition commences next Saturday, the draw being: White Star v. Power Board, Ramblers v. Patumahoe.

GAMES IN THE PROVINCE.

HAMILTON. HAMILTON, Saturday. The Rugby football season opened this afternoon with a game between Grammar Old Boys, Auckland, and Hamilton Old Boys. A good crowd was present, and a clean game was witnessed. The visitors were a much heavier team than their opponents, and won by 15 to 14. The early stages were in favour of Hamilton. Corner, the visiting half-hack, played a brilliant game. A. Singleton was also good, while Kemp and Brough were the best of the local men. Scores were obtained by J. Wilson, P. Skelton and Batty, Singleton converting all three tries. Brough, Griffiths and Hawke got the local tries, Hawke converting one and also kicking a penalty goal. MarlstS met Frankton and won by 9 to 6. TE AWAMUTU. The 1928 Rugby season was opened on Saturday afternoon, when the senior competition wa scommenced. The match at Albert Park was between Te Awamutu and Rovers, and resulted in a drawn game. Quin scored an unconverted try in the first spell for Te Awamutu, which was equalised by Ticklepenny in the second half. The last quarter was strenuously contested, but the score remained three all. The only other competition game was between Karamu and Huimai (two new clubs), the former winning by 24 points to The inter-club match between Hamilton Technical Old Boys and United Seniors was marred by an unfortunate happening early in the game. Banks (Hamilton) and an opponent kicked at the ball simultaneously, with the result that Banks sustained a broken leg. After receiving first aid the sufferer was removed to >the Waikato Hospital. The game was very keenly contested, and resulted in a win for United ( by 12 points to 11. United juniors and Hamilton Marist Old Boys played a drawn game, 3 points each. OTOROHANGA. There was a large attendance at Murphy's grounds for the opening of the football season, the Otorohanga Sub-Union having arranged a seven-a-side tournament between eight senior teams and eight junior teams. Some keen play was witnessed, and the final results were as follow: —Seniors: Kio Kio, s—o.5 —0. Juniors: High School, 10— u. MATAMATA. The Mntamata Rugby Union has decided to commence its senior and Junior competitions on Saturday next. There will be live teams in the senior grade and six in the junior grade. A third grade and schools' competition will also be held. Included In the newcomers to Matamata football this season will be Knsor, a Thames rep. of last season. At a Management Committee meeting of the union on Friday night Messrs. A. G. Yardlcy and J. Cummings were re-elected delegates to the Waikato Rugby Union. CAMBRIDGE. The Cambridge Rugby Union's Club competitions do not commence until May 12, but the first matches of the new season were played at Victoria Square on Saturday. Tamahere Juniors met a Hinuera team, the game resulting in a draw, with no score. A Lodge match followed between representatives of the Cambridge and Hamilton (M.U.) Lodges, the local team winning by 12 points (4 tries) to nil. PAEROA. Paeroa Rugby Union opened its 1928 season at the Domain on Saturday. The weather was dull and showery. The seuior game between East and West resulted in a win for West by 14 points to 4. The game was fast and open. The first half ended without score. In the third quarter, from a five yards' scrum on East's quarter, L. Masters (West) worked the blind side, and sent out to Ray Sw&nn, who dived and scored for West on two occasions. Swann kicked penalty goals for West in this quarter. In a loose forward rush, Jim Rackham drop-kicked a beautiful goal for East. In a junior game. Suburbs (Hikutala) drew with West (Paeroa), 6 all. For Suburbs, A. Morrison scored two tries, and for West Poland and Bailey each got a try. Third Grade.—West 24, beat East 3. WAIHI. In the senior competition Matura 6, beat Wniklno 3. Waiktno Juniors 3, beat Mataura juniors by 3 point's to nil.

WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, Sunday. Thp Rushy season was opened at Wellington yesterday with a seven-a-slde tourney. In the senior event Old Boys defeated Petone in the final by 20 points to CARTERTON. MASTERTON, Sunday. The Rugby season In the Wnlrarapa was offleially opened at Carterton yesterday with a seven-a-sicle tournament. Following were the results of the finals:—Seniors: Greytown A, 10. v. Old Boys A, 0. Juniors: Grey town A, 18 v. Old Boys, 0.
