TE AROHA ANNUAL

The Inst but one of the country circuit of trotting fixtures was held to-day when the Te Aroha Trotting Club brought off tho annual meeting. Big fields were the order of the day, and with the track in pood order some exciting racing was witnessed. The special train from Auckland was freely patronised and with locals and others from surrounding districts present there was a record attendance for the fixture. The chief event the Te Aroha Cup, which in addition to the prize money carried a £~>o silver cup for the winner, was won by Gold Dial. The Waihou Trot, the next event of importance, went to Gold Star. During the day the sum of £15,75*2 10/ was put through the totalizator, an increase of £2625 10/ on the 1927 figures of £13,127. The Big Event. Toll Chimes was the only withdrawal from the Te Aroha Cup, and Tamerlane was the public fancy, being entrusted with £465, while Concertina £371, Taipare £350, and Gold Dial £269, were next best backed. Mars broke up at the start, and lost any chance he had. Hobora was the early leader from Peter McKinney, Tamerlane, and Gold Dial. Before reaching the stands Bingen King had taken charge, and entering up the second round Bingen King, Tamerlane, Gold Dial, and Concertina were all racing in line, followed by Mutu, Peter McKinney, Nelson Tasker, and Taipare •11 close up. The field was well bunched going out of the straight and along the back, but crossing the top Nelson Tasker had run through and was in the lead, with Tamerlane, Taipare and Gold Dial next, Bingen King dropping back. Before entering the straight, Taipare drew out and showed the way to Gold Dial, Nelson Tasker and Tamerlane. In the run home Gold Dial finished best and won by along neck from Taipare, who beat Nelson Tasker by two lengths. Peter McKinney was fourth, with Pitaroa, Tamerlane and Bingen King next. A Good Field. Singlement, Great Eyre, Gold Treasure and Cornwallis failed to parade for the Ruakaka Handicap. Ohena, £235, was first choice, with Gaza, £211, and Lord Haldane, £198, next in request, whil« Great Ballin, who finished •econd, only carried £52. At the start several failed to go •way properly, and after a furlong had been covered Roamer, Charming Pronto and Golden Park tangled and were pulled up. At the end of half a mile Lord Haldane had charge from Boada's Child and Gaza, and he was •till in command along the bafek, with Gaza next. Half a mile from home Lord Haldane led Great Ballin, who was just in front of Boada's Child, with the rest of the field strung out. Across the top Gaza and Lord Haldane were racing together, with Great Ballin three lengths back. This was the order into the •traight where Great Ballin. put in a good challenge, but failed to re«ch Lord Haldane by a neck, with Gaza half a length away third. Then came Edna Thorpe, Boada's Child, Regret and Gold Cast. A Favourite Beaten. Lackicwood was the oijly defection from the Hot Springs Handicap and the best backed were Haeranga Pai (£498) and Cornelian (£334). The winner, Horizon carried £109. Willie Mac and Haeranga Pai dwelt on the mark and Profiteer showed the way over the first furlong, and past the stands was attended by Manna, Gold Sound, Horizon, Bell Dial and Lady Barrington. Manna had taken command along tlie back and was still in front as they crossed the top from Bell Dial, Lady Barrington and Haeranga Pai. Horizon was first to turn for home from Manna, Lady Barrington, Bell Dial and Haeranga Pai, who were all close' together. Horizon did best in the run to the post' and got the verdict by a length from Haeranga Pai with Bell Dial one and a-half lengths further back. Lady Barrington was fourth with the rest aH bunched. The Trotters. Elego failed to parade for the Waihou Handicap, a two-mile event for trotters. Floraline (£434), Gold Star (£353) and Sebisca (£245) were most in demand, and the public were right on the mark, as these three filled the places. Bingen Star, Etta Cole and Bell Todd broke up at the start, and Peter Brown was the early leader, and be passed the stands attended by Peter Tracey, Gold Star, Billy Carbine, Sebisca and Etta Cole. Billy Carbine broke up at this stage of the race, and Peter Brown followed suit a little later, causing several others to leave their feet. Gold Star was in front along the back, Sebisca joining him as they crossed the top, and they turned for. home together from Floraiine, with the others well beaten. In the run to the judge, Gold Star and Sebisca broke, but Gold Star got down first, and went on to win by two lengths from Floraline, who finished fast, and beat Sebisca by two and a-half lengths. Wild Nut was fourth, followed by Bingen Star, Etta Cole and Appeal. The Final Event.

For the Farewell Handicap, with which the meeting concluded, Bell Tower, Toll Chimes and Andover were the oniy scratching*. Liberate (£407) Harris (£308) and Gold Cast (£24 l)' were met in request, while Charmina fronto was entrusted with £220.
