AMATEUR ATHLETICS,

The winter season of the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club was opened Carlaw Park on Saturday in conjunction with the Stack benefit carnival. The programme consisted of 75yds flat handicap, the metropolitan steeplechase and a putting-the-shot competition. There were close finishes in Ihe heats of the sprints, and the finish of the steeplechase roused great enthusiasm, X. F. Cooper, the second runner to finish, extending the champion, J. W. Rhodes, chairman of the Auckland Rugby League management committee, presented to J. W. Savidan, the cup donated by Mr. W. Morton, president of the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, for the winner of the Metropolitan steeplechase. The clnb's winter programme will be continued at the Domain next Saturday. Among the spectators of the athletic and boxing events at Carlaw Park this afternoon. was Mr. R. W. McVilly, president of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. and ex-president of the New Zealand Boxing Association.
