BOXING CONTESTS.
Spectators at Carlaw Park on Saturday appreciated the novelty of seeing boxing bouts staged on the oval in connection with the "Dick" Stack benefit gala. A number of clean and interesting decision bouts were presented under the auspices of the Northern Boxing Association, while several no-decision bouts extended the contestants and provided lively sport. Results:— "Curly" Man?on (8.0) beat G. Verrali (7.10); A. McPhail (9.0) beat R. Agnew (9.0); R. Thompson (10.0) beat D. Bray (9.12); J. Mayhill (9.0) beat H. Broadfoot (9.4); P. McCarthy (12.12) beat Frear (12.4). Draws were fought between R. Purdie (7.10) and R. Crood (7.10); and Buckley (11.2) and Gifford (11.4).
An exhibition bout of three twominute rounds was given by Frank Taylor (professional bantam champion) and T. Rickards (bantam and feather "Varsity champion). The bout was characterised by fast footwork, clean hitting, and good defence.
In the exhibition match between J. Broadfoot (professional middle-weight) and W. McLean (Territorial heavyweight champion) the latter filled the role of a punching bag. Broadfoot showed the professional superiority, and hit McLean when and how he liked.
