MR. JOHN DEMPSEY.
One of the few remaining men of the 18th Royal Irish Regiment who, served in the wars against the Maoris, Mr. John Dempsey, died yesterday, aged 88 years. He was born at Tipperary, Ireland, in 1840, and went to work at the age of 11 years as a labourer. Five yeare after he enlisted in the second detachment of the 18th Royal Irish Regiment at Inni&killen, which in 1863 arrived in Auckland by the ship Elizabeth Ann Bright, on July 4. Mr. Dempsey marched with his regiment to Otahuhu, and later went on to Queen's Redoubt. He was in several engagements, including the fight at Orakau. Mr. Dempsey also went with the regiment to Wanganui, where he took part in several engagements, being present at the fight at Nukumaru. When the regiment returned to Auckland, in 1870, Mr. Dempsey. obtained his discharge, after nearly 12 years' service. He worked in Auckland and Dargaville until he entered the Veterans' Home. He was predeceased by his wife, and leaves no children. Mr. Dempsey»held the New Zealand War medal, and was in receipt of pensions from the Imperial as well as the Dominion Governments.
