HOCKEY GROUNDS.

criticism: of di&wobte BOARD. REPLY BY CHAIRMAN. We have received the following letter from the chairman of the Dilworth Trust Board, the Ven. Archdeacon Mac Murray: "Your mild criticism of the Dilworth Trust Board in relation to'the Remuera recreation ground would be quite justified if the facts were not different from what you consider them to be. The most important fact unknown to you is that the HoctTey Association's tender for the ground was disqualified by reason of conditions inserted which were at variance with the board's conditions of tender, and which could rot in any circumstances have been accepted by the board. Another important fact is that the greatest expenditure on the hockey ground was for the building of a pavilion. Debentures for £400 were raised for this purpose; the Dilworth Board lent £600 on mortgage, and with tMs money the pavilion w*s built. When the rent of the ground and interest on the mortgage fell into arrears the board redeemed the debentures, and remitted the mortgage and also the rent and interest In arrears, and wiped out an overdraft of nearly £600—in all a total of £1940 18/8. Then when the Hockey Association was again given the use of the ground it allowed the pavilion to fall into such a state of disrepair that for the safety of the public and its own protection it had to warn the public not to use it. As I never reply to anonymous letters I cannot reply to the criticisms of 'Fairplay.' "
