A VETERAN SKIPPER.

NEARING HIS CENTURY. CAPTAIN CHRISTOPHER WELCH. AN ADVENTUROUS CAREER. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") DUNEDIN, this day.

Captain Christopher Welch, of Port Chalmers, is one of the most remarkable shipmasters who have navigated a vessel to Otago Harbour. He is now in his 99th year. Amongst numerous incidents in an adventurous career at sea was the dramatic attainment of his first command. He was second mate on a sailing ship chartered to carry troops to India, and on the outward trip a feud between the chief officer and the captain reached a climax with pistols as weapons. The chief officer fatally wounded the captain, whose exchange shot killed the officer outright, and the captain died a few hours later. Automatically, the second officer took charge, and Captain Welch completed the passage and brought the ship out again. When he arrived in New Zealand with gold diggers for Gabriel's Gully rush, Captain Welch was master of his own ship.
