THE CHAMPION PAIRS.

Win FOR WEST END. Th® Anal for the champion pairs of the Auckland Centre played on Saturday ®n the Mount Eden green produced a contest that was full of interest from < ttart to finish. < First one and then another of the two ; ®PP°"ing teams, West End and Stanley, ield the advantage, but both got tpletherI ether on even terms at the twentieth ead and had to fight out a desperate tussle on the last head. Details are as follow:— I. Clarke and W. Bremner (skip), West End 23 , !w. J. Johnson and D. W. Jones (skip), Stanley 22 The West End pair got the touch of the green first, and led off with the Bandy lead 7 points to nil on the third head. Thm :':'»n?ey made a start with a brace, but ;i o to West End on, the sixth head i:-ide things look very black .for tho maritime At this stage the board showed, West , n< ?, 14 » Stanley 2. However, the trend •I the game now changed. Bremner, in «ndeavour to run out the lying shot, wnt his own bowls oat and the opposipwn counted three. The eighth was

closely contested, and Jones outdrew the West Enders on a long head to score two. Having got a start the Stanley pair gave a fine exhibition and gradually cut down their opponents' margin. Finally on the fifteenth head Jones and his partner got back the five they had lost on the sixth, and for the first time took the lead at 19 to 16. A two on the next head placed Stanley in an excellent position. However, at this stage Bremner, who had been forced to do a lot of driving, met with better success. On the 17th head he took kitty to the ditch for three, and on the next he ran out the shot bowl and counted a single. The nineteenth was Clarke's head. He drew beautifully, and Bremner playing nicely into the head, Jones was five down when he. played his last bowl, saving Once more West End led on the board by a single point. The nineteenth produced a fine duel, and Jones drew shot with his last bowl to count one. Score 22 all.

On the final lead Jo'inson held shot with his second bowl, only to be beaten by Clarke. He drew shot again with his third, and with his fourth lay 2, but Clarke got in with his final bowl. Jones found the ditch with his. first. Bremner drew wide. Jones failed by six inches to draw inside Clarke's bowl and then narrowly missed with" a. run. Bremner put in a block and Jones, failing with his drive, left West End winners by one point. The score board at the end of each head read as follows, the Stanley score being shown first in each instance:— —3, —5, —7, 2—7, 2—9, 2—14, 5—14, —14, B—l4, 8—15,10—15, 10—16, 12—16. 14—16, 10—1G, 21—16, 21—19, 21—20, 21—22, 22—22, 22—23.

At the conclusion of. the match the winners, and also the tunners-up .were heartily congratulated by the president of the centre, Mr. Jas. Pascoe.
