The Paengaroa-Te Puke Hack Club's annual meeting to-day called out people from all parts of the Bay, for besides being race day it is regarded locally as a district holiday. Shops and offices in Te Puke closed about 11 a.m. and large crowds journeyed to the Maketu Crossing "by car and train. The first race, the Maiden Handicap, started well on time and the rest of the programme was carried out without delay. Although the dub has no totalisator, visitors to the cburse spent a bright and happy day, showing that racihg can be made attractive without the thrill of trying for the big dividends. During the day selections were rendered by the Te Puke Band. The Cup was presented by Mr. C. E. Macmillan, M.P., who apologised for the absence of Mr. F. F. Hockly, M.P., the joint patron. He also presented Mr. Porter, the owner of the winner, with two entree dishes, the ladies' bracelet to Mrs. T.
