IMMIGRATION.
A PRONOUNCED DROP. 2LBTXK MONTHS' FXGTOUBB. (Special to " Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. A pronounced drop in the immigration figures is revealed by a statement issued by the Department of Immigration in proof that the Government has carried out its intention to restrict the issue of assisted passages to the Dominion until economic conditions improve. The following figures show the arrivals of assisted passengers in New Zealand during the year ended March 31, 1927, and the eleven months, ended February 29 last:—

Included in the total of men are 195 'boys brought out under the various schemes of Flock House, the Salvation Army and the Church of England, for which the Government was not responsible. In the total of women are 319 domestics, who came out under the control of the Immigration Department. In addition, another 290 women came to the country with the intention of taking up domestic work for the first time.
The total drop for the eleven months, as compared with last year, was 68 per cent. The effects of the restriction were first felt in May last. In that month the number of arrivals dropped from 933 to 189.
