ARRIVAL AT TAIRUA.
ENTERTAINED BY SETTLERS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) TAIRUA, this day. The Minister of Public Works reached Tairua last evening after a strenuous day of travelling in the course of his tour of the Coromandel Peninsula. From Parawai the party travelled for seven miles by a timber train. Then they crossed the range on horseback. From Puketui a motor car carried the tourists to Hikuai, where the settlers entertained the Minister to luncheon.
Replying to requests for a road giving access to the district, the Minister said the officers of his department favoured the Waihi route as against the Kauraeranga route, because there' was more settlement in the former area. He felt bound to consider the economical aspect of the matter, but he respected the opinions of settlers who desired another route. Whatever the decision might be he felt that the work should be put in hand promptly. After receiving local deputations the Minister was the guest at a dinner given by the Tairua and Hikuai Settlers' Association. To-day the party is proceeding to Whitianga, where the Minister will be the guest of the Mercury Bay Sword fish and Mako Shark Club on a deep-sea Ashing cruise.
