C.O.D. TRADE.
THE BRITISH ASPECT. The latest number to hand of the Northamptonshire "Journal of Commerce" contains an article dealing with the relatively small but expanding business that is being done by British firms with customers iit New Zealand on the C.O.D. parcel poet system.
After a reference to the protests that have been made to the Government by local firms and the Ministerial reply thereto, the journal comments as follows: "Bearing upon this it may be mentioned that overhead costs of retailing in New Zealand are very high, and credit is given, especially in country towns, to an extent not known in the United Kingdom. But the cash customer often finds it greatly to his advantage to trade direct with some well-known firm in the United Kingdom, a firm, perhaps, with which he has done business before emigrating to New Zealand. This particularly applies to residents on the West Coast, which is sparsely settled except in the colliery centres, where a large percentage of the miners are British born.
"The C.O.D. system can be developed by British firms to the advantage of themselves and their customers here, providing satisfaction is given in -quality and the price is a sufficient inducement to the purchaser to maintain the connection. Figures show that the trade is assuming proportions that call for consideration by British business houses doing export retail business."
