ANGLICAN GENERAL SYNOD.
SITS IN WEIXINGTON. OPENS ON APRIL 19. On April 19 the General Synod of the Anglican Church of New Zealand opens in Wellington, when some important matters will come up for discussion. The "Church Gazette" for April states:—
"The bill for submission to Parliament regarding amendment of the fundamental clauses of the constitution will be reconsidered. The bill provides that, notwithstanding any provision in the Church constitution to the" contrary, it 6hall be lawful for General Synod to alter any of the fundamental provisions from time to time as the need arises.
But the Bishop of Dunedin has declared that he will resist to the utmost any alteration in the fundamental provisions of the constitution, and in order to meet his objection it is now proposed to leave the constitution untouched. A new bill has been prepared for presentation to Parliament authorising General Synod to adopt a new prayer book and a new version of the Bible notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in the constitution. This means a reopening of the whole question. The new bill is much more limited in scope than the bill adopted by General Synod in 1925. Synod will be asked to pass a statute to confirm the creation of the General Church Trust and to provide for the administration thereof, and of the cathedral site and bishop's house site in the diocese of Auckland. Another important matter to be considered is the appointment of a bishop for the Maori diocese. A bill will be introduced providing for amendments in the canon | law, with the object of bringing it up-to-date."
