MAIN HIGHWAYS.

WORK IN THE NORTH. IMPROVEMENTS IN HAND. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. The Main Highways Board, at its meeting this week, received reports from its engineer regarding the progress of the more important improvements now in hand. These included the following:— Kawakawa-Mangamuka.—The lower course of metalling has been completed on six miles of this section. Te Karae-Mangamuka.—The whole of this section has received the lower course of metal. Waimamaku-Ohaeawai.—Taheke Deviation: 58 chains of this section has been metalled. Whangarei - Kawakawa.—HukerenuiWaiomio: The trimming and grading between'' four miles and six miles 40 chains is almost complete. Three 40ft span bridges have been erected at four miles 37 chains, six miles 19 chains, and six miles 25 chains.

Waiwera-Mangawai.—Tomorata-Man-gawai Section: The metalling of this section has been completed. - Auckland-Wainui, via Birkenhead.— Albany-Dfury Flat Section: The formation between Dairy Flat and Massey Road has been completed.

Great South Road. —Manukau County Division: The western half slab of the approach to Wiri Bridge has been paved with concrete. Manurewa Town Division: Between Hill Street and Alfriston Road the shoulders of the pavement have been scaled. Mercer Town Board Division: The filling 30ft wide has been completed up to the northern end of the station building.

Pokeno-Waihi.—Whangamarino Town Board Division: The placing of the inetal for the* first course has been completed betwen three miles 48 chains and four miles 75 chains, and the second course of metal has been completed from four miles to four miles 75 chains. Pokeno-Tauranga Junction to Coromandel.—Waihou River Bridge: The concreting of the deck of this bridge has been completed except for one span. The swing span has been placed in position, and 73 fender piles have been driven during the month. The western approach road has been formed. Hamilton-Rotorua. —Tapapa-Mamaku: A start has been made with the metal ling of this section. Matauiata - Tauranga.—Kaiinai Hill • This formation work has been c ' between 12 miles 22 chains 'as 61 chains.
