SHORT OF COAL.

GAMBIA RIVER ARRIVES. DELAYED BY HEAD WINDS. With barely a hundred tons of coal in her bunkers, the steamer Gambia River, en route from Occan Island to Lyttelton. arrived at Auckland this morning to replenish her supply. She left Occan Island on March 9, •and was expected to take nine days on t lie voyage. Shortly after leaving the island, however, a* strong head wind sprang up. increasing to gale force after the vessel passed Hunter Island. The vessel's speed was reduced for five days, lier average daily run beine only ISO nautical miles, instead of her normal average of 232 miles.

The delay left the vessel very short of coal, of which she burns 32 tons per day. The hundred tons which remained was barely -sufficient to take her to Lyttelton under favourable conditions, so Captain Allett was forced to bring the vessel to Auckland. As 3300 tons of her cargo was consigned to this port, the vessel will unload the local portion first, and then go to Lyttelton to complete discharge, thus reversing her original schedule.
