"SPORT, NOT CASH."
ADVICE TO AMATEUR CLUB.
"RETAIN YOUR STATUS."
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
CHRISTCHURCH, this day.
"Retain your amateur status at all costs," was the advice given members of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club by Mr. C. S. Thomas in the course Of an address on the traditions of the club.
"The question of professionalism is one of grave import," he said. "I have nothing against professional athletics. Some of the greatest athletes in the world are professionals, but we, as a club, are here for the sport, not for the cash."
The professional, continued Mr. Thomas, always "fell down" when he retired from the track. He had nothing to show for his performances, whereas the amateur with anything like a good record had a row of cups to remind him of the days when he was running with the placed men.
