When the Papatoetoe public hall was officially opened on February 28, 1918, Sir Frederick Lang, who performed the ceremony, said that, in spite of the war, sixty houses had been erected in the course of three years, and the school roll had increased from 170 to 260, while land values within a mile of the station had risen from £100 to £300 an acre. As regards the attendance at the Papatoetoe school the roll is now in the vicinity of 600. The population of the district haa trebled; and a atrong deputation, including representatives of local sports clubs and organisations requiring the hall for social functions, suggested to the Papatoetoe Town Board thia week that the facilitiea at the h'all were no longer sufficient for district require* ments.
