RANGITIKEI MEETING.

FIRST DAY AT BULLS.

VIVO BEATS LADY DESMOND.

PART AUG A TAKES OPEN SPRINT. W. H. JONES RIDES THE DOUBLE, (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. The annual meeting of the Rangitik< Racing Club was opened to-day on th Bulls course. The going was hard an fast. Vivo won the Rangitikei Cup froi Lady Desmond, and Atareria, and in th Scott Memorial Partaga scored froi Miss Pat and Vast Acre. Both winner are trained by C. Jackson, at Hawen and were ridden by W. H. Jones. R. Reed, rider of Miss Boniform in th Trial Plate, faced the stewards after th race, and was fined £10 for not ridinj his mount out, as required by the Rule of Racing. The totalisator handled £13,849, com pared with £13,664 on the correspondinj day last year, an increase of £285. Indifferent Jumping. Elysianor was the favourite for th< Hurdles, but after leading for a mile h< was headed by Bonhomme and Poly phemus. This pair led him over the lasl fence, with Modern coming fast. Ouc< over Modern beat Bonhomme home bj three parts of a length, with Elysianoi three lengths away, and Polyphemus another three lengths off, in fourth place Then came Kilburn and Mount Marta Modern did not have a great deal tc spare from Bonhomme, mainly owing tc some indifferent jumping. Bonhomme ran a very creditable race for his first time over hurdles. Elysianor ran well, but appeared to be feeling the hard going. Polyphemus was given such a long time to settle down that his effort to make up the leeway, which he did quickly, left him without a finishing run. Winner Carries Only £58. Thrift was a very solid lavourite for the 7 Maiden Race. Jfcee Simple and ivyiigzone were also well backed. The eventual winner, Rash, carried only £58. Thrift was restless at the barrier, and although drawn No. 1 eventually started from tne middle of the field. She did not get away well, but Double Mint was the actual last to leave the mark. Fee Simple and Rash made the pace to the turn, where Thrift had run through on | the rails, and thiß was the order to the straight, Sky Rider and Vexilhim showing up at the head of the bunch. Fee Simple ran out coming into the straight, taking out Rash and leaving a big gap, through which Thrift made a run. In a good finish Rash beat Fee Simple by a head, with Thrift a neck away. Double Mint vas fourth, then came Miss Boniform and Sky Rider. Thrift was unlucky at the start, but she got such a good run afterwards, especially coming into the straight, that she could have won had she been good enough. Nothing was ever likely to best the leading pair after a couple of furlongs had been covered. Double Mint was noted for her good race after getting left, and Miss Boniform is a likely improver. Vivo's Convincing Victory. Lady Desmond was a slightly better favourite than Bright Bay for the Cup. Lady Desmond got out well and led with Twink and Vivo for a couple of fuT- ' longs, when Vivo went out clear, and was five or six lengths to the good going down the back, the others being fairly well bunched, led by Twink, Lady Desmond and Bright Day. They closed up at the half-mile, where Vivo's lead was reduced to a couple of lengths, and she led for the straight from Twink, Atareria and Lady Desmond. Once in line Atareria and Lady Desmond challenged, but Vivo held on and won by two lengths from Lady Desmond, who beat Atareria by a length. Twink was fourth, followed by Bright Day and Kilmiss, with Opa and -Novar tailed off. Vivo won all the way, and ran a good race. Lady Desmond's race was a good indication of her prospects in the immediate future, and she was hanging on well at the finish, though Vivo beat her comfortably. Atareria ran a fair race, but h& disappointed in the ran home. At the turn he looked certain to do better. The others were only fair to moderate. Xendip Soon Home Again. Mendip was a hot favourite for the Ngatiapa Handicap, for which Maui, Tanagra and Bissac also were well supported. Hymestrason and Mendip got away best, and led from Rising Star and Maui, with the others further back. Tanagra beginning slowly. Hymestrason weakened coming into the straight, where Mendip went right away and won by four lengths from Maui, who beat Bissac by two lengths. Hymestrason was a moderate fourth; then came Borsalene, Tanagra and Rising Star. It was easy money for Mendip, who gave nothing else a chance. m— Pat Injudiciously Handled. Vast Acre and Miss Pat were the favourites for the open sprint. Nastori got left at the post. Vast Acre was soon in charge and led from Dobbin, Partaga and Miss Pat. Miss Pat was up with Vast Acre and Dobbin entering the straight, where Partaga secured a run on the rails. In a fine finish Partaga got up to beat Miss Pat by a head. Vast Acre was three parts of a length away, third. Dobbin was a fair fourth, and Bonogne was next. Partaga won through getting up on the rails, butall the same ran a good race. Vast Acre went very creditably under her big weight, and was only headed off in the closing stage. Miss Pat's rider was a little too anxious on her, and made his run a trifle soon. Dobbin was not too lucky at the straight entrance, getting squeezed between Vast Acre and. Miss Pat. Miss Pat should have won. Lieutenant Bill Never Headed. Royal Acre was the favourite for the Pukenui Handicap, from Limosa and Vigilance. Lieutenant Bill led ally the; way, and at the straight was well of Royal Acre and Airtight. Rojfcl Acre reduced the lead to a length at the post. Limosa was aver a length / off third, with Vigilance fourth and Airtight next. Limosa was very unlucky. She got squeezed right out at. the 1 start, lost a lot of ground, and finished much stranger than anything. f i Vigorous Riding by L. G. Merria. _ Ruanui was a solid fay/rarite for the 1 High-weight from Manly and Whehttunui. .. Whenuanul led practically all the way from Ruanui, with Manly and Oration next. Ruanui got up in the last few strides to beat Whenuanui by » bead. Oration was « length back, third, with Vesperua and Manly next. Only the vigorous riding of L. O. Morris tol Baas* * Wh&mmh

Oration ran a fair race, but Manly, after having every chance, was disappointing. Vesperus ran quite a creditable race. War Flame Unlucky. Orcades was a firm favourite for the concluding event, from Helotis and White Ringlet. Helotis led with Shinning Star from War Flame and White Ringlet to the turn, where War Flame got knocked back. Helotis was still in front a furlong from home, where White Ringlet challenged and beat her home by a length. Shining Star was two lengths back, third, then came Lady Cynthia, Orcades and Holus Bolus. White Ringlet won comfortably in the finish. War Flame was unlucky, as she was going well on the turn. Orcades and Lady Cynthia were fair, and should improve. Detailed results— OHAKEA HACK HURDLES of 130sovs. One mile and a-half. 3—MODERN (Mr. J. O'Meara), 9.6—P. Mcßrearty 1 6—BONHOMMB (Mr. H.
