A SHAKESPEARE RECORD.
FIRST FOLIO RESOLD FOR OVER £13,000. A record price, which is not definitely stated, l»ut which exceeds the former j record of £13,500. is said to have been realised by the Wantage-Crawford Shakesj>eare first folio. The Wantage-C'rnwforc! copy, so called because it was located by Sir Sidney Lee in the library of Lady Wantage, was sold recentlv to aii American collector for £10.000. Mr. Dressel North, the New York dealer, has just disposed of it to an American connoisseur, who withhold* hie name. Refused as Gift. This first folio was onee offered as a gift—and refused with a statement that proved to be prophetic. Sir Coutts Trotter, grandfather of the late Lord Wantage and the then owner of the book, lent it in 1835 to John Halkett of Richmond Hill, and later begged him' to ♦!V,? iark of hsa esteem.
