A six»r®omed house occupied by Mr. W. King at the corner of Portage and Park Roads, Papatoetoe, was burned down Bhortly after three o'clock yesterday afternoon. The outbreak started in the wash-house which was attached to the house, and in half-an-houf the plae® was gone. A motor garage and outbuildings at the back were also destroyed.
A •umber of small articles of value were saved by Mr. J. Greer, a telegraph operator, who with Mr. W. Tremayne, was the first to arrive at the fire. The two men broke open the doors and Mr. Tremayne saved a motor cycle which was in the garage.
The house had been locked up for an hour when the fire occurred, and Mrs. King arrived back when the place was in flames. Two valuable Pomeranians had been locked in the house and had a narrow escape. They were let out when the wash-house door was broken open. One of the dogs was badly scorched- The house was built in 1916.
