DECK OFFICERS.
SEEK HIGHER WAGES.
AGREEMENT NOT REACHED
REFERRED TO ARBITRATION COURT
The Merchant Service Guild dispute came before a meeting of the Conciliation Council yesterday, when matters for discussion were conditions of employment and rates of payment for deck officers employed in the coastal shipping services trading out of Auckland. The parties were represented by the following assessors:—Officers' Guild, Captains F. A. Maeindoe and B. Burk; shipping companies, Captain R. C. Hammond, Messrs. F. Wilson and W. Baragwanath. An agreement upon several disputed clauses was arranged. The representatives of the Guild desired that a substantial alteration should be made in the present regulations in respect to the weekly hours of employment. They also claimed that the rates of wages should be increased. As an agreement was not reached the dispute will be referred to the Arbitration Court to deal with.
