Ohinemuri J.C.

Annual Meeting At Paeroa.— King Aman's Hurdles.—Juvenile To Avon Court. CUP TO DESERT GLOW. KING PEG TAKES THE NOVICE. The Ohinemuri Jockey Club's animal meeting opened to-day at Paeroa in favourable conditions, and will be concluded on Monday. There is a splendid attendance from the district as well as from the Waikato and D'ames, besides which a good many Aucklauders are present. The track is in capital order. Backers Begin Badly. In the hurdle race, the opening event !of the day, backers made a bad beginning, as Potaanui £805, Lady Spalpeen £595, and Archibald £443 failed to return any of the investments. Backers of the favourite got a poor run, as his rider lost an iron early in the race and pulled his mount up. Archibald feil at the first fence, and Fane was pulled up early. When the field had settled down Raitihiki was showing the way to Gold Rain, King Amans, Lord Thnrnh&m, Mia Bella, Lady Spalpeen and Zircon. Hong the back Raitihiki had a good break on the field, and racing next to him was King Amans and Gold Rain. Three furlongs from home King Amans and Gold Rain closed on the leader, and the former turned for home clear of Gold Rain, and had no trouble to get the verdict by two lengths, with Lady Spalpeen a neck further back third. Raitihika was a poor fourth, and then followed Mia Bella, Lord Tburuham, and Zircon. Both Zircon and Mia Bella appeared to be rather big in condition. The Juveniles. Nine went to the post for the Karangahake Handicap, with Avon Court, who carried £846, a good favourite, the nest in the order of the betting being Orewa £675, and Winnington also had good support. The field got away well, but Te Taone lost his rider (Foster) before they got settled down. Avon Court was soon in front from Winnington and Te Apurangi, and they led along the back and were racing together passing the half-mile post, attended by Orewa, Te Apurangi and Mauriaena, who were close up. Crossing the top Winnington, Avon Court and Mauriaena were bunched just ahead of Katarena, with Perception next. Avon Court was in front when the field raced for home, and appeared to be winning easily when Lucy Rose came very fast on the extreme outside, but failed to reach Avon Court by a length. Perception was a neck away third, with Winnirgton fourth. An Overdue Win. [ A big field contested the Novice Handicap with Brilliant Light a very firm favourite, being entrusted with £1046, while Upoko £660 and Vallar £450 were next in demand. The favourite was unlucky, for he got knocked back before the field had gone a furlong and \ lost his chance. King Peg and Vallai soon put a break on the field, and be- . fore two furlongs had been covered • these two were out six lengths in front, Going along the back Venus Abbey, [ Upoko, Cloudbank and Partial Eclipse , were racing behind the two leaders, who ■ were still well clear of the field as they . crossed the top. The order was the same . into the straight, and King Peg finishing , on best got the decision by one and ai half lengths from Partial Eclipse, who : finished well and beat Vallar by a [ length for second money. Cloudbank . was fourth, followed by High Tide, ■ Thanks, Luminary and Brilliant Light. The Cup. King Lu, Gala Day, In the Shade, Te Koroke, and The Lover failed to parade for the Ohinemuri Gold Cup. The public elected Corinax favourite, and he had £1066 invested on his number, the next fancied being Valkon £748 and Pegaway, who carried £728. Queen Arch was badly left when the barrier lifted, and Pegaway was the first to show out, but be- ! fore the field had gone a furlong Flying [ Juliet ran to the front and led from Corinax and Pegaway. Passing the | stand Flying Juliet and Corinax were together, and then came Pegaway. i Desert Glow, Eden Hall, High Pitch, Transformer, and Valkon. Corinax drew clear of Flying Juliet along the back, 1 but as they crossed the top Flying Juliet ' drew up to him again, with Pegaway Desert Glow and Eden Hall close up. Corinax was out in front as the field turned into the straight, with Desert Glow and Eden Hall handy. In a gre.il L battle to the winning post Desert Glow prevailed by a head from Eden Hall, i who beat Valkon by half a length Corinax was fourth, followed by Queen Arch, Pegaway, Town Bank, Plying • Juliet, High Pitch, and Transformer last, Detailed results:— I HANDICAP HURDLES of 175sovs. One mile and a-half.
