THE TARANAKI MEETING.

OPENING DAY TO-MORROW.

THE FIELDS REVIEWED

The;, autumn meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club will open to-morrow, and with several Auckland horses engaged there will be a considerable amount of local interest in the fixture.

The Opening Event,

The meeting will open ,with the Waitara Hurdles. Ned Kelly ha 6 plenty of pace and can jump well, and he will have some friends. Powhiri was second at Woodville in the Papatawa Hurdles, one mile and a-half, and won two similar events at Marton, while he was placed in a six-furlong race at Hawera last week. San Fera showed- good form at the latter meeting, being placed in the hurdles each day. Just John is a useful sort, though he has not won since early in the season. Airtight Avaa second to Nucleus on the first day of the Egmont meeting. Of the others Elysianor may be the best. Probably most money will go on NED KELLY, SAN FERA, AIRTIGHT. The Juveniles. Gold Dawn is top weight in the Ngamutu Juvenile Handicap, and she has form to commend her. She finished third in the Maiden Scurry at the Taranaki Hunt meeting and won over six furloiigs : at her next start at Waverley, was second to Melissa in the Juvenile Handicap at the Taranaki summer meeting, won the Juvenile Handicap on the first day of the Stratford meeting, and was third at Hawera on Saturday. Tea Miss has also performed well this season, and won the Electric Handicap at Hawera on - Saturday. Te Atiawa annexed the Electric Handicap on the second day of the Stratford meeting, while Fermanagh finished third at Hawera last Thursday. Upoko and Lady Quex may be the best of tha others. Probably the best backed will be TEA MISS, GOLD DAWN, TE ATIAWA. The Sprint Event. Thirteen are carded for the Flying Handicap, The Hawk being top weight with 9.7. This is 21b more than he carried into third place in his last start at Trentham. Kiosk has shown good sprinting ability this season, and seeing that he had 10.0 when lie ran second to Reremoana in the Palmerston North Stakes, 9.3 should not stop him. Rapine has not raced for a long time, and Lady Cavendish has not a great deal to recommend 'her recently. Te MonanUi finished third in the Shorts Handicap,-six furlongs, at Trentham in the spring, while of the others Tip Tree (who was third at Hawera to Reremoana and Vast Acre) ami High Finance may be the best. The favourfte division may be KIOSK. HIGH FINANCE, THE HAWK, The Electric Hack. All those engaged in the Moturoa Electric Hack Handicap have 8.0, and the public may probably entrust most money to MENDIP, ... f RESINOUS. The Taranaki Cup. The Taranaki Cup is the ehicf event of the day, and a good field is engaged. Hynanna won so well at Wellington and Egmont that he is sure to start favourite', despite his big weight. Piuthair won over nine furlongs at Stratford, which is the best she has done since returning from Australia. She annexed the event last season. Eden Hall showed a return to form at Takapuna, when he annexed the Cup, and he should run well. Yoma finished fourth in the Egmont Cup, while Transformer (wha was unlucky) was second in the Takapuna Cup. Mint Leaf was third in the latter event, and going on to Hawera' finished second to Hynanna in the Egmont Cup. He is in good form just now, and will be among those fancied. Bright Glow (who was third in the Egmont Cup), Goshawk, and Greengrocer may be most fancied of the others. Probably when the machine closes most of the investments will be found to be on HYNANNA, MINT LEAF-HEPO ♦ BRACKET, TRANSFORMER. The Okato Handicap. Royal Acre is at the head of the list in the Okato Handicap, and he is entitled to that position, for he has performed well recently. He has won a six-furlong and two seven-furlong events recently, .his last success being at Hawera on Thursday, while he has been placed on numerous other occasions. The Swell is a pretty useful sort, and won a double at Stratford, and was placed at Wellington. Baby Bun won at Takapuna, and Ladykiller is said to have been very unlucky at Egmont on Saturday, where he finished third. Of the others Kawhakina, Miss Mercia and Sovena may be the best. When the final figures are adjusted probably the public will have supported the following: THE SWELL, BABY BUN, LADYKILLER. The High-weight Handicap. A good field is engaged in the Mimi High-weight Handicap. Tiega won at Hawera and finished secon on the following day. Paitonu is fai. /'useful and performed well earlier in the season! Hipo is engaged in this event as well as Si W reserved for this may go W , ell " J he Immigrant, after his display at Takapuna, is sure to be favourite, i. ■? 0 y got to repeat that form to be hard to beat. Orazone and Manlv both showed winning form at Hawera The best backed may be THE IMMIGRANT r ORAZONE, MANLY. Concluding Event. The day's sport will conclude with the Timaru Hack Handicap, and if Royal Acre is reserved for this he should go well. Melissa has shown winning form this season, and Paul Lucerne won a double at Hawera. Gold Dawn is also engaged in this race is well as the Juvenile Handicap. Marble King won at Stratford, and he, Upoko and Dimmer may be-best, fancied of. the others. | Probably the favourite division will be I * PAUL LUCERNE,, j ROYAL ACRE, | MELISSA. jjigS-
