BURNT UP PASTURES.
CORN CROPS A FAILURE
KAITAIA SWAMP FIRE
(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") KAITAIA, this day. j Continued dry weather is burning up I' pastures, and the cream supply to fac- I< torics is showing a considerable falling [< otf. Within the last few days the posi- j i tion regarding crops has been very un- 1 unfavourable. In many instances the ; corn crops are a failure, and potatoes j also are showing poor results. Several farmers would plough in the corn crop if only the drought would break, thus enabling them to raise another crop before winter. In various parts of the district fires'' are raging. Certain peaty parts of Kaitaia Swamp have been blazing for days, and show no sign of burning out. i Reports from Oruaiti state that the schoolhouse and settlement were only saved from destruction bv fires through the settlers working for hours lighting the flames. It is stated ihat drv danthonia grass some distance from the settlement was fired, by natives, and a; breeze sent it raging in the direction of | ihe settlement. Fortunately no serious j 1 damage was done. " * 1
