BLAZE AT PUKEKOHE.
VERANDAH COLLAPSES.
BOARDINGHOUSE SAVED,
(By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.)
* PUKEKOHE, this day.
An eight-roomed boardinghouse in West Street, Pukekohe, was discovered to be on fire at two o'clock this morning. When the brigade arrived the flames had a firm hold in the dining 100 m, kitchen and passage, and were spreading rapidly to the other rooms.
With two leads of hose and a strong lead of water the brigade quickly extinguished the outbreak, which had originated in the dining room. Two rooms were badly gutted and the contents, including a piano, destroyed. Six bedrooms were damaged by smoke and water, but the twelve boarders saved their personal effects.
While the firemen. were engaged on the verandah roof it collapsed and two men, E. Wild and S. McKinnon, were precipitated to the ground. Wild sprained his knee and McKinnon was cut and bruised.
The building, which is owned by Sir. J. W. Johns, is insured for £1000. The contents, owned by the lessee, Mrs. K. Clark, are insured for £460.
