WATER LOW IN POWER DAMS.
DIFFICULTY AT MANGAHAO
EPS TO REDUCE CONSUMPTION
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, Friday
If the dry spell at Mangahao continues it may be necessary -to effect still further reductions in the load to be carried and with this in view the Public Works Department proposes to call a meeting at Palmerston North at the beginning of next week of power boards interested to discuss methods of meeting the situation.
In making lliis announcement to-day the chief electrical engineer, Mr. T. M. Kissell, stated that the dams at Mangahao were down roughly 30ft at present, and were falling on week days at a rate of more than 4in a day. Consequent upon partial breakdowns of some of the fuel plants supplying power into tlie system the level was registering a drop of 12in on Thursday night, and probably again yesterday. It was hoped, however, that over the week-end, even if rain did not fall, there would be a few inches gain in level under the reduced load. It was anticipated that the plant could be operated with the present reduced output down to a level of 38ft below overflow level.
In the British Muesiun there is a sapphire weighing nine carets and containing a bubble that appears and disappears with changes of temperature.
