RHEUMATISM'S TOLL.
Industrial Invalidity ,In
Britain.
COSTLY AILMENT
(British Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, January 27.
As a first step in the scheme for providing similar institutions in all large industrial centres the British Red Cross Society, with the support of the Health Ministry, is establishing in London a new clinic for treating rheumatism.
Nearly one-sixth of the industrial invalidity in Britain is caused by rheumatic diseases, which, cost the country nearly £2,000,000 every year in sick benefit payments, apart from the wastage involved in lost working time.
The general idea is to bring suitable treatment within the reach of workers, thus enabling them to remain at their work.
The clinics for rheumatism which were opened in London by |he Red Cross Society during the war are still doing valuable work. They are treating 20,000 patients annually. The trade unions and friendly societies are showing a practical interest in the scheme.
