AT HOME AND ABROAD.

Miss Wood, who resigned her position in October last as lady principal of the JWomen Students' Hostel, Wellington Terrace, after 19 years' service, will leave next week for India, en route for England, where she will take up her residence permanently. She will be succeeded by Miss Sylvia Wilson, who for some time past has acted in the same capacity at the Kelburn Hospital, Fairview Crescent. Miss A. Murison lias been appointed to the Kelburn vacancy, and both Miss Wilson and Miss Murison will commence their new duties on February 1, states "The Evening Post."

In the City Temple, London, where she used to preach. Miss Maude Royden had leaflets printed and placed in the pews to give a "lead" to the thought of those who came to the services. The following were the words: "Whosoever thou art who enterest this church, remember, it is the House of God. Be reverent; be silent; be thoughtful. And leave it not without a prayer to God, for thyself, for those who minister, and those who worship here."'

Hand-painted damask is the newest thing in napery (states a London correspondent). The tablecloths, serviettes, supper cloths, etc., have hand-painted designs upon them. They are beautifully done and extremely expensive. A cloth two yards square costs seven guineas, and other things are priced proportionately. The linen has to be specially chosen for the purpose. It is sunbleached, the process taking some months. It is then tested rigorously to sec if it will take the paint and hold it when washed and boiled. The patterns are hand-painted by artists, most of the designs being used only once for individual cloths, etc. Owners of this exquisite napery are advised that it will look best in evening light. The ideal way of showing it is to set the table with candles, but inverted lighting directly overhead is recommended as next best.
