LOCAL BODY ELECTION.
SOME FEELING SHOWN,
The air was somewhat electric at a meeting at the Waitemata County Council Chambers, convened to fill the vacancy on the Waitemata Electric Power Board, and the Auckland Hospital Board, occasioned by the death of Mr. Jas. McLeod.
As the only bodies interested in the Power Board election were the Helensville Town Board and the Waitemata County Council, this election was taken first. Mr. Mackie (chairman of the Helensville Town Board), who is also a member of the Waitemata County Council, proposed that Mr. G. O'Halloran fill the - vacancy, and Mr. O'Halloran was elected.
At this stage the Conference of Hospital Board electors opened, and Messrs. Scholium and Verry (Rodney) wan ed to question Mr. A. M. Laing, the Waitemata County Council's nominee, on his policy. Mr. Verry stated that his district had not received a fair spin from the Auckland Hospital Board in con» nection with the Cottage Hospital at Warkworth, and .they had a right to know Mr. Laing's attitude before voting.
Mr. Laing stated that he would act fairly, but as he would be only one member on the board, and subject to a majority yote, he could make no definite promises.
Eventually Mr. Laing was declared elected, and Rodney delegates left the room declaring that if they had so desired they could have nominated a man and upset the proceedings, as the appointment had to be by full agreement, but they would let it go at that.
