LEAKY PETROL STATION.
DANGER TO COMMUNITY.
PETROL FOUND IN WATER. PROTEST IN CHRISTOHURCH. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The danger of a leakage from petrol otations was brought under the notice of the City Council last night.
Councillor Elizabeth McCombs said the facts, as revealed to her, showed that these stations were not safe near any other building. In a case brought under her notice petrol was found in water in excavations that were being made for a building 80 feet from a petrol station. Samples of the water showed 60 per cent of petrol, and she had been informed that if one of the workmen had lit a match the other men would not have been able to get out in time. She did not believe that any blame was attachable to the proprietor of the station, who had informed the dangerous goods inspector immediately. The case showed that petrol stations were dangerous, and that a special area should be set aside for them.
It was decided that the dangerous poods inspector be instructed that in future he must immediately order the closing at any tank or any petrol service pipes found to be leaking, until such time as they are repaired to his satisfaction.
