ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENTS,

TOHUNGA.—BIimp is a threp-year-old gelding by Gasbag from Marfaux. He won the Trial Plate (six furlongs) at the'Marton spring meeting, also the Spring Trial Stakes (seven furlongs) at the Wellington spring meeting during the present season.

The Lucullus—Queen of the Earlli two-year-old, Camp Prince, has not been unduly hurried by his trainer, J. Buchanan. He moved nicely in a sprint over a few furlongs at Ellerslie last Saturday morning, and although he was not extended he displayed promise.

Henna scored her first success this season when she annexed the Lake Handicap at the Levin meeting on Saturday last. By Kilbroney from Lady Louisa, she is bred on the riglit lines, and further stake-money should be in store for her during the present season.

Double Mint has been racing in improved fashion in her last few starts around the country meetings, and may soon pick up a stake. She has been shaping well in her track work just recently, and George Laing haa her in tip'top condition for future engagements.

Judging by his recent track form, Whaka King should give a good account of himself in the Melrose Maiden Stakes at the Takapuna meeting at the end of the week. The King Lupin gelding is a smart beginner, and that will be a lot in his favour on the suburban track. i

F. Gilchrist has been keeping Sir Mond moving along in his track work, And the Seremond two-year-old is shaping in promising style. He is due to make his first appearance in a race at the North Shore meeting on Saturday next, when he will contest the Cambria Handicap.

Although Town Guard is not engaged at the Takapuna meeting next Saturday, the Archieatown gelding is a regular worker on the track at Ellerslie. He has not been noticed doing anything special in the shape of fast work, although he displays a well-trained appearance.

Frowning Beauty, who claims an engagement in the Melrose Maiden Stakes on Saturday, has been working well on the' tTack at Ellerslie. The halfsister to Broadwood will see out the seven furlongs all right, and will be running on when most bf the others are stopping.

War Officer pleased by the manner in which he shaped in a seven-furlong gallop at headquarters last Saturday, morning. The Warplane gelding is engaged in - the Takapuna Plate next Saturday, and although he,will be meeting some good hacks in that event, he is sure to run well. 1

Young Pretender, who Is engaged in the Maiden at the Takapuna meeting .Jiext Saturday, is a four-year-old gelding by Some Boy ll.—Roisette. He is a member of F. Tutchen's stable at Te Rapa, and displayed a lot of pace in the Trial Stakes at the Waikato spring meeting, held last month.

J. Anderton's maiden candidate, Hone Heke, sprinted usefully over four furlongs a few mornings back, and is an improving hack. Although he has done very little racing, Hone Eeke displays sufficient pace in his track work to •uggest that he may show up in hack events later on in the season.

Orbit, who acted as runner-up to Auriculus. in the second division of the Trial Handicap at Te Rapa in October, is down to compete in the Melrose Stakes at Takapuna next Saturday. The half:brother to Arch Opal will only require to reproduce 'his Waikato form to ensure him running prominently.

The Te Aroha-trained Town Bird claims an engagement in the Takapuna Plate, and, providing he is at his best on the day, he is going to be one of the hardest to beat in the big hack event. With every prospect of a big field being engaged, Town Bird's qualification as a speedy beginner will be a great asset in 'his favour.

The well-known handicapper, Mr. J. E. Henrys, who Tias been spending a few months abroad, is at present in San Francisco on his way back to New Zealand. It was Mr. Henrys' intention to have been a passenger by the Makura, which arrived at Wellington from San Francisco yesterday, but he is detained there by the serious illness of his daughter. If Miss Henrys be sufficiently recovered, Mr. Henrys intends to return to New Zealand by the next steamer from Vancouver. . ..

Desert Lad, the three-year-old gelding by Acre from Inno Laddo, who scored i in the Maiden at Levin on Saturday, [ - put up an impressive performance, for he was giving the leaders a long start when they had settled down. R. Reed 1 rode him very skilfully. 0f course he Jf 4 with whiph to accomplish altogether .it was- an acrSJ!! I ot Inno S!' K m of r> ! Bert Lad . «by Sir Laddo - tr«y a . mare by: Tor- 1 pedo, bred by the Ute Mr. W. DourU ß Inno Laddo was only a moderate perl former herself, but the maW. S Acre.ha. to all appearance re&dll something very promising in Desert Jj& «•

After being plated at Levin on Saturday the horse Carrigallen lashed out and kicked T. Raymond, a farrier, on the arm, fracturing the bone.

Gala Day has been responsible for some good track efforts recently, and is better conditioned than he has been for some time. The Quin Abbey gelding is not engaged at the approaching Takapuna fixture.

According to southern reports Commendation has not made the progress expected after his return from Australia, and he is to be .given a lengthy spell. He will probably not be seen out again till well on toward th> end of the season.

H. Hastedt will have Golden Krist to represent him in the Alison Cup on the first day of the Takapuna meeting. Arch Queen and Spalmore, the other two members of his team, will be racing on the second day of the meeting only.

Bissac, who won at long odds at the Levin meeting on Saturday, is a six year-old mare by Bisogne from Vestalls, by Martian from Ingleneuk. Last season she annexed the Novice Stakes at Foxton, and that was her only other success since she commenced racing. She is a half-sister to Euchre.

Mireusonta was a fine sprinter a few seasons ago, but he is getting on in years now, and cannot be expected to retain his speed indefinitely. However, he looks as though he is going to be hard to dispose of this season when the company is not too select. He has had four races, and after being placed in two of them won at Levin on Saturday.

Some Lad, who anexed the Wereroa Handicap at the Levin meeting on Saturday, is a four-yeai:old by Some Boy 11. from Jeane Laddo, and therefore a halfbrother to Mountain Jean and Arrow Lad. Last season as a three year-old he won one race and was placed on two other occasions. Now that he has struck form he is likely to be seen to advantage again in the near future. i .

Bissac, who won the Hack Sprint at Levin on Saturday and incidentally paid a substantial dividend, is a sister to Orcades, who was bieaten by Mireusonta in the open sprint. They are by Bisogne from Vestalis, a Well-bred Martian mare who is also the dam <sf Euchre. Bissac was ridden by T. Metcalf, who was having' his first mount since coming tp the North Island to try his luok.

Mister Gamp showed ability over sprint courses last season. Until Saturday, however, he had never been tried in public oifer hurdles, but he immediately made good in this department of the game. This was at Levin, when he accounted for the Manakau Hurdles in easy fashion, beating, among others, Vexatious, who has proved useful since she was started over "the sticks" in June last.

Bennanee, who raced well at the Canterbury Jockey Club's spring meeting withoiit getting a stake, is among thole engaged in the Feilding Cup, at the etid of the month. Bennanee was unlucky to have been beaten in the Fendalton Handicap on the last day of the Riccarton fixture, for, with another stride to go, he would have beaten Yoma. Bennanee should give a good account of himself if started at Feilding.

The safety number at the seven-furlong post at Takapuna is 23, and those remaining in the Takapuna Plate total 31, However, it is fairly certain that scratchings will reduce the field to the. required number, thus avoiding a division.' With a valuable gold cup attaching to the first prize it would be rather unsatisfactory if the owners of winners of divisions had to draw for it.

Mr. C. G. Dalgety has a useful pair to represent him this season in Paperchase and Footfall, and on their showing #t Riccarton recently they should be in ■first-class order ,if they are brought north for the summer meeting at Ellerslie. Last - season when raced at this fixture they did not return home emptyhanded, Footfall accounting for the Auckland Racing Club Handicap and Paperchase for the Bowe'n Handicap.

Plane, who finished second to Desert Lad in the Maiden at Levin on Saturday, is a four-year-old, a half-brother by War Plane to Birkie, a useful sort who used to win in,the same colours a few seasons back. Plane showed promise when first raced just twelve months' ago, but after three races he disappeared from the scene. He had a couple of races earlier this season, arid now that he has struck form he should not be long in the maiden class.

Vajkon will contest the Alison Cup to be decided on Saturday next, and will be ridden by S. Henderson, one of our most successful Although the son of Valkyrian has so far never won a race exceeding a distance of eight and a-half furlongs, he gave evidence at the recent Waikato Hunt meeting, •• when he ran second to Mosaic in the Members' Memorial of one i mile and a-quarter, that a longer journey would be well within his compass.

Paitonu, the winner of the "" evin Cup, is a ptetty useful sort. As a Jiree-year-old he showed winning ability, and last season he won on three occasions, while he was placed on seven other occasions. This season he won the Wairongomi Handicap, seven furlongs, at Otaki, and was narrowly beaten in the Waverley Cup by Euphonium. Paitonu is engaged in the Feilding Cup, and with 8.5 may be | hard to dispose of if started. Last sea- | son Diogenes won both these events.

On the strength of-her victory in the October Hack Handicap at-the Wellington meeting last month, when she defeated a big field of well-performed hacks, Ti Tree will be-one of the popular fancies if she is saddled up to com test- the Takapuiia Plate next Saturday! The daughter of Tea Tray, and Taiamai is a very speedy filly, and the manner in which she ran out the six furlongs at Trentham suggests that the extra furlong attached to the Takapuna Plate will not seriously trouble her.

It is stated thft Sir George Clifford's team for Auckland will probably consist of Centrepiece, Child'* Play and Front Rank. Centrepiece is just coming into form and he should be very near at his best by the time the summer meeting comes along. He improved with each of J his races at Riccarton earlier in the month. Of course, Child's Play is Unbeaten, but Front Rank did not show np prominently at the Cup meeting. When .right this filly can gallop, and when she hops out in front she takes ■oine catching.

Mandarine ran a good race on Saturday, but his action was not at all suited to the turning course,, and lie lost ground there at the critical stage of the race.

Miss Pat, who annexed the Hokio Handicap at Levin on Saturday last,, is a filly by Acre from Sartovna (,a half-sister to Vladimir). She has a lot of pace and last season annexed three -events,, besides being placed in others.

0. Cox, who was at Levin on Saturday with Euphonium, stated it was very unlikely he would take Keremoana, Lady Cavendish and Lady Desmond to the Auckland summer meeting. The form of the team at Riccarton had not come up to expectations, and their Christmas engagements would be at Manawatu. Prior to winning at Levin on Saturday Some Lad had not started since the Rangitikei meeting in March last, 1 so that his forward condition reflected credit on his trainer, J. P. Some Lad showed useful form last season in some of his races, and with another year jon to his age he looks like turning out a good sort this season.

Crown Area, who has been more or less off colour this spring, and in consequence could run only in the Stewards' Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting, is now getting on well. G. New stated at Levin on Saturday that Crown Area would probably forego his Auckland engagements at Christmas, and race at the Manawatu meeting.

Mister Gamp was having his first start in a hurdle race when he won at Levin on Saturday, and with experience he should do well at the game. His form on the flat was fair, and he was always finishing on at the end of his races. A further asset is his ability to run well in heavy grounds, so that there are good prospects ahead of him.

Archeen, who won the Cheltenham Handicap at the Takapuna meeting 12 months ago, is aga.in included among the field to contest that event at the end of the week. The Marble Arch gelding seldom runs a bad race on the suburban course, and that fact will not be overlooked by those attending the seaside meeting next Saturday.

Broad Acre and Le Champ, both by Acre, a four-year-old gelding and a three-year-old filly respectively, who carry the same colours as Crown Area, are both promising sorts and should not on their form at Levin be long in working their way out of maiden ranks. Le Champ is a handsome filly out of Lady Rowley (by Strowan). She got a very po6r start in the hack sprint on- Saturday, then finished well up.

G. Jones, who was at Levin on Saturday with Mr. W. H. Gaisford's three-year-old Excess, stated that Commenda-i tion on being put- .into work for his' Christmas racing season began to be troubled with his feet. It was considered advisable eventually to send him down from Greenmeadows to Oringi, and he has been turned out until the autumn. He will thus not be at the Auckland summer meeting. Jones said that he hoped to would be possible to race Commendation in the autumn, but he did not appear to be sanguine about it, so possibly he will not be seen out again till next season. >
