BUT IT DID NOT COME.

ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE FAILS. IMPROMPTU GAS PIPE USED. An impromptu gas pipe made of two sheets of newsaper was the means by which Edward Lomas (51) attempted to take his life on September 28.

Lomas, when charged at the Police Court to-day. with having attempted to commit 6uibide, said that he did not remember anything about it. Constable Du Temple, of Freeman's Bay, stated tha-t on the day in question Lomas made a pipe; about "threo feet in length, out of a newspaper. This he encased in a black knitted tie to keep the paper folded. One end was attached to a gas jet, and the other near his mouth. Covering himself with the bedclothes, Lomas waited death. However, another occupant of the same houue discovered accused in a weak condition from the effects of coal gas poisoning and summoned witness. Lomas was taken to the hospital and. had only, just been discharged from tho institution. Lomas, who was . separated from iis wife, had previously attempted suicide. Lomas, whom Sergeant Calwell' said was still in a weak state, was remanded for a week in order that he might be kept under observation.
