PROLONGED STRIKE.
American Miners Idle For Six Months. 72,000 RETURN TO WORK. (Received 11 a.m.) MONTREAL, October 3. The Chicago coal operators and miners both believe the strike settlement which is effective throughout Illinois is likely to influence a settlement in other centres. Altogether 72,000 have returned to work in Illinois, under the old wage scale, but the situation in Indiana, Ohio, lowa, and Missouri, is not affected.
Early in April last a general "walkout" of the union members halted the activity in the bituminous coal industry in the central American coal fields. Over 150,000 men left work in the soft coal regions with the expiration of the wage agreement on March 31. Mines in West Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and the outlying districts of lowa, Missouri, Kansas. Oklahoma, and Arkansas were affected. Fully 2000 shaft and strip miners were idle, though the maintenance men remained at work under agreement to protect the property against damage. During the "walkout" the men left their posts qnietly.
