LOCAL BODIES.

MOUNT EDEN. The Mount Eden Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr. E. H. Potter) presiding. Building Permits.—lt was reported that building permits of a value of £11,660 had been issued during September, inclusive of twelve houses valued at £7685.

Cromwell Street Extension.—The extension of Cromwell Street was agreed upon, a condition being that the Mount Albert Borough Council should pay half the estimated cost of £218.

Water Services. —A report from the Finance Committee, recommending that where new water mains were laid, ratepayers requiring services to be renewed should be charged half price, was adopted. Streets Improvements.—lt was decided to lay Brentwood Avenue and the eastern end of View Road in permanent material as soon as possible; also to put down the far end of Dominion Road in bitumen. I

Grange Road Improvements.—The engineer reported that surveys and plans were in progress for the improvement of Grange Road, and that tenders would be called on Octol)6r 24, Prospect Terrace Deputation.—'The bad state of the road and footpaths in Prospect Terrace was brought under notice by a large deputation, which included a number of ladies, the leader being Mr. W. N. Nagle. The council promised that the terrace would be put in order immediately on completion of some other works which were now in hand.

MANUREWA TOWN BOARD. The Manurewa Town Board met last evening, the chairman (Mr. A. C. A. Sexton), presiding over a full attendance of members.

South Road Maintenance. —The Main Highways Board wrote asking why the board's estimate of £150 per mile for the maintenance of the Great South Road should be in excess of the estimate of future maintenance given when pushing the Highways Board to subsidise concrete paving.—The chairman stated that sinkage on shoulders, etc., would probably be considerable during the first year. In any case about half of the year had now passed and the board had not yet taken over the road. This meant that the estimate could probably be reduced considerably. A reply is to be sent accordingly.

Corner Building.—A letter was received from Mr. J. Park, architect, in connection with the proposed erection of a building on the corner of Great South and Station Roads. A lengthy discussion ensued, it being decided eventually to ask Mr. Park and the owner of the property (Mr. E. S. Pegler) to confer with the board on the property during the present week.

Train Service.—Mr. 6. A. Osborne took strong exception to the Railway Depart-1 ment's arrangement of delaying a passenger train for 34 minutes on race days. He contended that about a score of passengers were awaiting the train's arrival at its usual time on a recent morning, but that a long wait ensued before the train arrived in accordance with a special timetable. In the interval only four additional passengers arrived at the station. It was decided to communicate with the Railway Department. Jellicoe Park.—The engineer stated that as a result of an inspection he considered that it would not be a costly matter to grade the eJllicoe Park Reserve from the railway line to Jellicoe Road. He was requested*to make further investigations and report.

Post Office Facilities.—lt was decided to approach the_ Post and Telegraph Department requesting the provision of a street telephone box, also a stamp machine and additional letter boxes at the corners of Browns and Great South Roads, Great South and Mahia Roads. Cemetery Reserve.—lt was decided to burn the scrub on this property and let a contract for ploughing.
