27,650,257 CARS IN USE.
INDIA STILL WALKS. The total number of cars in use in the world at the beginning of this year was 27,650,257, of which 22,137,334 were registered in the U.S.A., making an average of one car for every five persons there.
Second comes Canada and Hawaii with one for each 11 persons, New Zealand follows with 1 for 12, Denmark and Australia tie with 1 for 17, Great Britain has 1 for 43, Argentine 1 for 45, and France 1 for 46.
India comes a bad last with 1 for every 3893 persons, its nearest pedestrian competitors being Japan with 1 for each 1398 and the Dutch East Indies with 1 for 1085.
LIIrTINO JACK USAGE. Unless this very necessary adjunct to a car is applied properly and handled with care trouble is likely to ensue. It is a good plan when "jacking up" to do any kind of work that is likely to take more than a few minutes "to make a point of removing tlie jack handle from its socket. When undertaking any more elaborate work than the changing of a wheel, so that the weight of the car has to be taken for some time entirely by the jack, there is always the danger oi tripping over the handle if this is left in position and of knocking the car off the jack. This precaution is especially desirable when a man is working underneath the car. Should his assistant accidentally stumble over the handle and knock the jack away a very serious accident is likely to result. Another vital precaution is to uee that the jack is directly under the load to be lifted.
