TO RAISE A SMILE.
BEAT THEM. (Sent in by Russell Watt.) Pat was working on the road in his shirt sleeves with two Englishmen. The Englishmen decided to play a joke on the Irishman, and painted a'donkey's head on the back of Pat's coat, and watched to see h:m put it on. Pat of course, saw the head on his coat, and turning to the Englishmen said, "Which co t ™ two wiped your face on m * WHAT DID THE GROCER SAY? (Sent In fty Alfred Cbadderton.) The grocer was busy making up orders the other day when a thoughtful looking boy came in and'fetood in front of the counter. Presently the grocer spotted him and looked down. "Well, my little man," he inquired, and what can I do for you?" "Please put down," said the little boy reading from a book, "ten pounds of sugar at sevenpence a pound, four pounds of coffee at two shillings a pound, two pounds of butter at two shillings a pound, and two cakes of soap at sixpence each." 'Tve got them," said the grocer, looking: up from his pad. "How much does it come to!" asked the boy. The man ran up the column of figures. "Eighteen shillings and tenpence," he answered. "Hurry up, sonny!" "And if I was to give you a pound note how much change would I get?" "One shilling and twopence," said the grocer impatiently. "Come on. I'm in a hurry." "Oh, I didn't want to buy them," remarked the boy as he made for the door. That's our arithmetic lesson for to-morrow, and I couldn't work it." THE BUDGET.
