SPRING RACING.

THE WANGANUI MEETING.

FIRST CLASSIC .OF SEASON. THE FIELDS REVIEWED. The spring racing season will be advanced a further stage to-morrow when the Wanganui Jockey Club will open their spring meeting. With the excepj tion of the Wanganui Guineas, the first , classic race of the season, the fields are excellent, and there should be some good racing if the weather is fine. Toe Maiden Race. The programme will open about 11.45 a-m. with the Maiden Race (six furlongs), an event for three-year-olds and upwards who have not won a race, the former to carry 7.7 and those over three to carry 8.0. There are a number engaged who have little to recommend them, but Marton form may serve to throw a little light on the event. Aro' de Val, Wild Pigeon and Vigilance were prominent during the running there. The first-named was third on both days, while Wild Pigeon was third and fourth respectively in her engagements. Vigilance ran a. fair race in the Trial Plate on the first day. Tea Time was accepted for on the second day, but did not start. Hβ has never won a race, but this four-year-old has only been once out of a place' during hia racing career. In this event last year he ran second, and probably ean be expected to stay on a little better now. Broadacre went well at the Taranaki Hunt meeting, and probably most money will go on TEA TIME ARO DE VAL BROADACRE Okehu Hurdles. Brigadier Bill, who has pride of place in the Okehu Hurdles, is a good hurdler, though he has been raced very little since the Wellington meeting, when he ran third in the Trentham Hurdle Race. He was a starter in a flat race at Marton last Saturday (the Heaton Park Handicap), and finished fourth, so that it will not require much to get him into form. Koauau had two outings at Marton, finishing second in the Ladies' Bracelet, and the racing there should do him a lot of good. When in form he is a good hurdler. Tawehi started on li»lf a dozen occasions last season, winning the Hack Hurdles at the EgmontWanganui Hunt Club meeting, and finishing third in this event last year at Wanganui, to Nukumai and Koanau H» was third on the second day in the Gonville Hurdles to Enare and Santiago, while at Waverley, a little later, he was second in the hurdles on the first day and won the event on the second day. His next appearance was in a flat race! at the Taranaki Hunt meeting recently, when he ran unplaced. San Pedro is a useful sort, and on his last appearance ran third in the Spreydon Hurdles at Riccarton. Jnst John, after falling at the Patnranga Hunt meeting, rehabilitated himself when he won at the Taranaki Hunt Club meeting. Arataara was a starter at the Marton meeting and finished third in the Second Hack Hurdles after being prominent all the way. Of the others, Trottas and Peshwa (who won and also ran second at Marton) may be the best Probably the public may invest most money on

BRIGADIER BILL KOAUAU PESHWA The Putixi Handicap. Polydectis, who has top weight in the Putiki Handicap, will be his first appearance as a three-year-old. He is one of Stewart Waddell's team, and last season won three races, the longest being five and a half furlongs. David Garriek woo. a seven furlong race at the Carterton meeting last season, and when taken on to the New 3?fti*nri Cup meeting ran well, being third to Rascal and Hynamia in the Spring Plate (one mile), third in the New Zealand Derby to Commendation and Seatown, only being beaten by a head by the latter, and second to Taboo in the Seymour Handicap (seven furlongs). He has only started on a couple of wtigifms since then, being unplaced on each of them. He would only require to be at his best to have a great show. Cerf won three six furlong races last season* and scored over seven furlongs at the recent Grand National meeting. Teri, who is owned by Mis. Perry, ran second to Polydectis in a juvenile event last season, and Romantic performed well up to nine furlongs winning over that distance, while he also scored in shorter raeea Elysianor, Tintoretto and Atbenry, the last two of whom won at Marton, may be the best of the others. The public may select

TINTORETTO ATHENRY RQMANTIC Ike SeafieH Handicap. Thirteen are carded for the SeafieH Handicap. Royal Game won well at the Grand National meeting over a mile after finishing second is the Brabazon Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt Club's meeting. Le Choncas was given a race at Marton, but failed to get into the money. Lausanne k the full-brother to Valieare, who was recently imported into this country, and he has performed well in Australia up to a mile. Beaumont showed at Marton that he is coining back to farm, and his second to Huikai is the Railway Handicap was good. Monagkan won the Stratford Handicap, six furlongs, at the Taranaki Hunt meeting after performing well last season, and he will be- in demand if started in this event in preference to the M*iftT»g»i Handicap. Thaw was a good two-year-old, and at his last appearance won the Manawatu. Sires' Produce Stakes, seven furlongs, beating Gaseony, Damaris and Great Charter in 7.27 1-5. Hip* was'ftnfsMng on very fast in the Railway Handicap at Marton on Friday last, white among the others Partaga may appeal most. Probably the favourite division will be: MONAGHAN BEAUMONT HIPO The Classic RaceOnly four are left in'the Wanganui Guineas, the first classic race of the season. Otairi, by Paper Money from Isabel, one of P. TDleyV team, was started on three occasion* last sew, fhrishing second to Paleia in the Juvenile Handicap at Marton, third in the Fitzherbert Handicap at Trentham to Thaw and Melissa, and occupying a similar position to Paleta and Laughing Prince in the Nursery Handicap at the aame meeting. In the Shade won three eyeats last season, while Damans, tbe half -fcrotker to Motley by Limond, started on half a dozen occasions for one win. He ran a good race in the Manawatu. Sires' Prodace . Stakes and the North Island Challenge Btakes. In the latter he waa left and then ma I»ysander to a seek for second place. Great Charter waa the

Cloverlea Handicap, five furlongs, at the Manawatu summer meeting and was second to Cimabue in the Hawke's Bay Stakes, six furlongs and a-half. When the machine doses probably most money will go on

DAMARIS

The Durie Hade Handicap.

A large field is engaged in the Durie Hack Handicap. Town Bird showed at Marton that it would not be long before he is in form. Denier performed well last season, while Bank Note, after looking a certainty at Marton over six furlongs, was beaten by a narrow margin, Miss Mercia and Volplane being heads in front of him. That race should do him good, and he should be a better horse to-morrow. Miss Mercia is a really good sort and has shown a lot of speed in her races this season; while of the others Chips, Avro, Wanderlust, Xastori and Te Kawana may be best backed. Probably the public will support

BAXK NOTE MISS MERCIA DENIER

The Big Event,

The Marangai Handicap is the chief flat race of the day. Te Monanui showed at Marton that it would not be long before he was back to bis best, but at the weights and the distance some of those lower down may appeal much more. Degage has not done much for a long time, but is reported to be in good order. Beacon Light won the Higgie Handicap at Wanganui last spring, the Avondale Cup and the Champion Plate at Wellington, and was then sorted out as favourite for the New Zealand Cup, but went amiss, and has not been started since. If he is lined up at the barrier he will have some friends, for he won at his first start last season. Eden Hall

went well at Marton last week, and, Mask, though a disappointment last season, is said to be galloping well at Wanganui. Imperial Spark did not impress at Martan, while Bennanee and Shining Armour are a useful pair. Monaghan won at tbe Taranaki Hunt meeting, and if reserved for this race in preference to the Seafield Handicap he will have some friends. Mint Leaf and Royal Mint were prominent at Marton, the hitter winning the Marton Handicap. Hβ was always well up during the nee and finished well. Alloway and Tame Fox may be the best of the others. Probably most support will be given EDEN HALL MASK ROYAL MDfT The programme will conclude with the Flying Handicap. Reremoana has not raced since the autumn, and he may require a run. Lysander is a great beginner, and, judging by bis track work, be will be one of the best backed. Grand Knight is stated to be at his best, while

Shirley is a great §printer. Oration, Doree, Kiosk, Laughing Prince and Hmkat (who raced well at Marton) may be the best of the others. Probably the the best-backed division will b*
