EDUCATIONAL AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF AUCKLAND BOARD.

A meeting of the Auckland Education Board this morning was presided over by Mr. A. Burns.

Admittance to Training College. The Department wrote stating that all probationers who were qualified under the regulations may be admitted to the Auckland Training College next year. It was not intended, however, to admit probationers from outside districts or any division B students to the institution, but applications for admissions of students of the C and D divisions, who had been approved by the senior inspector, mav be submitted to the Department for favourable consideration.—The letter was received. Appointment of Probationers. Having considered the question of appointments for the year 1928, the Department authorised the appointment of 198 probationers in the Auckland district. The chairman said that the proportion had increased, as but year the board was allowed only 130 probationers CUaafieatioa of Stndeats. The question of the classification and payment of ex-training college students, acting as relieving teachers, was apain discussed. The Department stated that classification in grade A was not intended to refer to ex-students who had already had experience in permanent positions or had established their standing on the relieving staff, but who had just finished their course of training, either as students or ae probationary assistants. Received. Departmental Economics. Owing to the present state of public finance, the Department finds it difficult to secure sufficient funds for providing actual school accommodation, and it is necessary to postpone. subsidies. It has, therefore, decided that its previous limit of the grant of £25 for furniture for teachers' rooms in schools must be withdrawn, and it could hold itself liable only for two-thirds of the actual cost of the equipment, the balance to be found locally. For the same reason the Department is to cease to pay half of the cost of installing hot water heating in school* already provided with open fireplaces.

The chairman observed that the winter was nearly over, and the communications were merely received.
