DUXEDIX, this day. great rainstorm from the Mmfh etrnck Otago yesterday, and large portions of Taieri Plains are now under wat«r. At Waipori nearly 2J inches of rain fell in 22 hours. The low-lying suburbs of Dunedin were also covered with much water, trains at Kensington having to run through water axle deep. Owing to continuous rain at Lawrence fifty yards of railway embankment were washed away last night, allowing water from Weatherstone's Creek to break through into the town. The main street was flooded with water to a depth of six feet. A great deal of damage was done to goods in shops. Several narrow escapes from drowning are reported. Residents in the flooded area were removed in motor lorries. This is said to be the biggest flood in the history of the town. There was still two feet of water on the streets at noon to-day, but the weather is clearing. Railway slip* are reported at WaiUbuna, Craig's Flat, and Bowler's Creek on the Milton-Miller , * Flat line, causing a suspension of the service to-day. The slip at Bowler's Creek will probably take several days to dear.
