UTTER SQUALOR.
POLICE FIND IK MELBOURNE. ( lIILD USED AS t PILLOW. iFrom Our Special Correspondent.) SYDXEY, August 23. A scene of utter squalor, in which a woman in bod was using her threc-years-old child as a pillow, was icund by Melbourne police when they raided a i-mall room in Johnston Street, Colling* wood, on Saturday. Complaints had been received regarding the treatment meted out to the <hild. and the police raid was the result. They anested the woman and her hu.-band, who was in another bed. Outside, a crowd of 200 had gathered, and as the prisoners were led to the waiting police van, the crowd jeered them and pa«sed angry comments. The boy was removed to a home at C'arluß, and will l*> treated as a neglected cliild. Agnes Greer, 36. and Percy Greer, -JO. described as a bootmaker, were subsequently charged with having failed to' provide proper food and nourishment for their child. Plainclothes Constable Edwards said that he found the woman using the child as a pillow. There were no bedclothes, and loose kjipok served as bedding. A lump of chewed raw meat was on a tin plate beside the woman's bed, while the floor was covered with dirt, crusts of dry bread, stale meat, and a number of empty beer and wine bottles. The accused were remanded.
