PONIES' WHY AT HUNTLY.

CHAMPIONSHIP SURPRISE

THISTLE DEFEATED BY SHORE

Chief interest in Soccer circles on Saturday lay with Ponsonby, who travelled to Huntly and opposed Rotowaro in the North Island semi-final of the Chatham Clip. The Aucklanders, after a hard first spell, became masters of the situation and ran out winners by four goals. The local side now meets the Wellington champion side, the finalists in the South ISland being Northern, of Dunedin. The Devonport men had the better of the argument, and, deserved their win. The Navy was too strong for a weakened Onehunga eleven, and won in the finish by three goals, while on the Domain Xorthcote gathered a brace of much-needed points at the expense of Y.M.C.A.

PONSONBY DEFEAT ROTOWARO.

OUTPLAYED FIRST HALF. ("Star - ' Special Reporter.) HUNTLY, Saturday. In beautiful weather, before a good attendance, though on rather rough ground, Ponsonby opposed Rotowaro at Huntly this afternoon in the North Island semi-final of the Chatham Cup competition—the New Zealand Soccer club premiership. The teams were :— I'onsonby.—Watt, Pickett. Williams. Morrison. Wright, Mooney. Hunter, Bell, Innes, Tomilty, and Adshead. Rotowaro. —Caldwell, Hall, T. Dodds, Crooks, Garriels. Beaumont. Berry, Cargill. Bullough, R. Dodds, Hunter. Rotowaro attacked immediately on the left, and Hunter centred, but Ponsonby packed their goal and conceded a corner. From this Hunter shot into Watt's hands. During this period great excitement prevailed, and more followed when Ponsonby's right got down. Wright tried a long shot, but the custodian saved, and a minute later cleared from a crowd of players. Rotowaro opened their attacks with great dr.sh. Amid roars of encouragement clever play on the right wing enabled them to attack, and Berry shot a beauty into Watt's hands. Th? goalkeeper saved. The position remained dangerous for several minutes. Ponsonby, up to this, had not inspired, but as the play proceeded they got better, and nice combination enabled them to remain attacking for fully ten minutes. Mooney. Tomilty and Adshead, together with Innes, who was in the centre, worked well together, and were particularly dangerous, hut though any moment a goal looked likely. Rotowaro's goalkeeper was only called upon twice, once by Innes and again by Tomilty. 1 Rotowaro were a- dashing lot and not to be denied. The left-wing broke away and a very dangerous attack was opened. Ponsonby backs and halves had hard work keeping fhem out. Cargill, Dodds and Hunter all shot, but Pickett twice got his body in the road, and Williams headed out. Two shots went over the bar. It was cup tie football, vigorous and dashing. After midfield piny Rotowaro attacked again, and Watts just threw away a long shot as Cargiß dashed in. Wright brought relief, and then' Po'nsonby, swinging the ball about in their best style, began a series on dangerous attacks. Tomilty and Adshead dropped In two high shots, then Innes headed in and Bell drove hard, but Rotowaro's goalkeeper was there all the time. Twice lie punched away and twice he threw clear. From a corner the custodian ran out arid spoiled Innes in the act of heading- Bacfcwards and forwards the play swung at a great pace, the exchanges being always thrilling, and any minute a goal might have come to either. Wright cleverly broke up several movements. He was playing a great game. Ponsonby. towards -the interval, took more command, and their clever drawing and passing had Rotowaro's defence tangled- Hunter and Ben both tested Caldwell, and Innes hit the upright. Adshead nearly beat him from the wing, and he had to go down full length to a shot from Morrison. A minute from the Interval, Garrick gave Watts a hot shot to clear. A dingdong half ended with the score:— Ponsonby J Rotowaro <* Scarcely had the second half commenced than Innes broke through, beat two opponents and scored with a shot from close range. Ponsonby 1, Rotowaro 0. Auckland's little contingent of supporters went wild with joy. Five minutes later, however, the home team attacked, and Watt had t6 clear from Bullough. and a shot'from Cargill was blocked by WiUlams. Ponsonby's left wing twice invaded in style, and from the last attack Innes headed into the goalkeeper's hands. Play slowed down for ten minutes, but Ponsonby livened up matters, and Innes put in a great first time shot. Shouts of goal went up, but Caldwell, who was playing a fine tame, got down to it and made a wonderful save. Following a short sharp attack by Rotowaro, Ponsonby were sent away by Pickett, and Innes, from a cross by Hunter, missed bv yards from a short range. At the other end Cargill tested Watt. Later, however, Ponsonby gave a fine display, and Adshead. running up the wing, shot hard for goal. The ball struck the far upright and went into the net. Ponsonby 2. Rotowaro 0. ponsonbv quirtly returned to the attack. Rotowaro was now aU disorganised, and Innes with a glorious shot, scored a tbird goal. Ponsonby 3, Rotowaro 0. Rotowaro had lost all their dash now, but towards the end they got going strongly twice and from the second attack forced a corner. It was a flash in the pan, for again Ponsonby dominated the play, and Hunter i"rom a corner put .the ball through. Tomilty to make doubly sure, breasted it into the' net, but it was Hunter's goal. Ponsonby * Rotowaro •••• ° It was a spectacular game, hard fought all the wav, the last twenty minutes excepted, when the home team was disorganised. Rotowaro should hare led on play by at lpast one goal at the interval, but afterwards Ponsonby. having got used to the ronch cround, were masters of the situation.

SHORE'S FINE WIN

Carter joining in and sending the ball hard tor goal a few yards ont: ' In pressure at the other end, Bradshaw tried a long dropping shot, Znill clearing, but Shore came again from a long clearance by Jones. Whitley and deal carried on the movement, beating the black and white backs for deal to drive hard home, the ball rebounding from the under side of the bar into the net.
