SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT.

£1000 FOR AGRICULTURE. GIFT OF MR, JOHN COURT. A scholarship for the study of agriculture is to bo established at the Masscy Agricultural College, Palmerston North, by an endowment of £1000, which is the gift of Mr. John Court to the Auckland University College. The gift was received at the meeting of tho University College Council last evening. The Hon. Geo. Fowlds (president) read a letter from Mr. Court's solicitors setting out conditions under which the scholarship might be awarded. It was proposed that it should be available only for students . who had been resident in the Auckland province for at least two years, and whose parents were unable to provide them with an education. The'Echolarship should be tenable for four years, thus providing for a full degree course, and in any year that an award was not made to a degree student it should be available to a student taking a short course of a practical nature. Under the new University Act the subsidy of 10/ in the £ on the gift could not be earmarked for supplementing the scholarship, said Mr. Fowlds, but would be added to the general endowment of the college. The president aded that Mr. Court had already shown his interest in the cause of agricultural education by giving a valuable pedigree Friesian bull from his Hobson Farm. On the motion of Mr. Fowlds it was decided to thank tho donor for his generous gift. "It is certainly a fine endowment," said Mr. T. U. Wells. The liiatter of drawing up regulations to be submitted for the approval of Mr. Court was referred to Professors Sugar and Worley to act with Professor Riddet, professor of agriculture.
