GIN AND GINGER.
POTENCY UNDERESTIMATED.
" SOBER" MOTORIST IN TROUBLE. FINED £15; LICENSE CANCELLED. Because he failed to keep count, and also because he underestimated the potency of several gin and ginger beers which he consumed on Saturday after a football match, William Hawkens (27) faced Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning, when he admitted that he was in a state of intoxication while in charge of hie motor car in Great North Road.
Sub-Inspector Lewin said that about 6.30 on Saturday evening accused was in his car in Great North Koad. The car was stationary when it was first observed by Sergeant Lambert, but as the sergeant went over to speak to Hawkens, the car commenced to move slowly away. Nothing previously was known against Hawkens.
Mr. Leary, who appeared for accused, said that Hawkens was a young man of sober habits. However, on Saturday, after a football match, he had a few gin and ginger beers, and apparently underestimated their potency. "Frankly, I do not think that Hawkens would have driven away," said counsel, who added that perhaps it was fortunate for accused that he was arrested when his car was practically stationary.
Mr. Hunt inflicted a fine of £15, and cancelled Hawkens' driving license for twelve months.
