FEWER BABIES.
DECLINE IN BRITAIN. Birth Rate's Sensational Drop. ALL BUT LOWEST IN EUROPE. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, August 7. The official figures of the birth iV:te in England and Wales for 1926 are 17.8 per 1000 of population, the lowest ever recorded with the exception of 1918. This was a phenomenal year when the rate dropped to 17.7. It is fully expected that the rate for 1927 will show a further decrease and will be lower than even the 1918 birth rate. It is now below that of France, nnd with the exception of Sweden, is the lowest in Europe. On the other hand the death rate and infant mortality are low, compared with moat other countries.
