GIVEN A JOB.
NOT THE KIND HE WANTED. THREE MONTHS IN MT. EDEN. ALLEGED BAG SXATCHLXG CASE. Leonard Walter La«h (30) was given a job this morning, but it was not the sort he had been hankering for. Lash was charged with failing to comply with the term* of a maintenance order in force against him, and in favour of his wife. When he appeared at the Police Court this morning, th* maintenance oflioer >uid that the arrear* jwere now £111 13/10. In May last La?h j bad calied upon him when he said he : was going to the Grent Harrier to work. ; However, nothing had since been heard of . him. I "I've been to the Charitable Aid j Board about work. When a man can gn I a job he can p«y I suppose," accused j told the magistrate. I "I'll find you a job."' said Mr. F. K. i Hum. "Three .months." J Lash ■was taken away back to the ; prisoner.*' room, but a little later on he was again placed in the dock- This time ho «a- charged with stealing a kit bag containing clothes and 3/ in money, of a total value vt £4, the property of Gertrude Bcesing. Lash elected to go be Tore the Supreme Court rather than accept summary treatment by Mr. Hunt, so the deposition* of the witnesses were taken. Miss Beesiug, a middle-aged woman, who keep* a confectioner's shop in I Hobson Street, said that she left her shop about 12.30 a.m. on July 27 for her lodgings in Vincent Street. When in Vincent Street &he heard a whistle which she recognised. It was a peculiar whistle, and she had heard it before. Accused often whistled when he came into her shop. On turning round she saw Lash. who snatched the bag away from her arm. He ran up Vincent Street towards Pitt Street, witness following him. HowI ever, accused got away. In the meantime J she went back and told her landlord of j what had occurred, while the Newton I police were communicated with. Half an I hour afterwards, witness, her landlord i and Constable Gamier were standing at : the corner of Wellington and Hob&on ! Streets when Lash appeared on the j other eide of the street. She went and i spoke to him, asking accused what ho [ had done with her bag. Lash denied ■ all knowledge of it. Witness was positive that accused was the person who snatched her bag from her. After other evidence had been given Lash, who pleaded not guilty, was committed to the Supreme Court for triaL
