NEWTON'S TRIUMPH. DEFEAT OF MARIST. WIXS FOR DEVON POUT AND J 'ON SOX BY. Brilliant sunshine and ideal spring weather drew a crowd of 8000 spectators to Carlaw Park on [Saturday where, after the best game of the season, in which the salient features of the League code were displayed to advantage, Newton strengthened their claim for the championship of the 15*27 season by defeating Mariat. The winners gave a brilliant exposition of back play and team work, the speed of the whole Newton machine, phis dazzling trickiness, completely baffling Marist on occasions, who were repeatedly beaten in positional play. Speed and fiery tackling were features of the game throughout. Against Ponsonby Graf ton Athletic flattered but to deceive. They led at one stage, and in the end the western suburb's side ran out winners by a wide margin. Richmond went on a harbour trip to Devonport, where the home team had tie best of what was going and a win.
