CIVILIANS GIVE UP.
•PLANE UNSUITABLE. (Received 11 a.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, June 28. Smith and Carter made their take-off shortly after the departure of Ma it land but after seven minutes the machine was seen to return, the wind shield being broken. The fliers hoped to resume the flight any moment, but after waiting several hours they decided to postpone the venture indefinitely. It is understood here that the airplane, which has an old engine, is not ■uited to a long distance flight.
