REJECTED BY DOCTOR.

IMMIGRANT "MAKES GOOD."

WANTS WIFE AND FAMILY.

ASSISTED PASSAGE REFUSED.

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star. , )

DUNEDDf, this day.

An immigrant in Dunedin has "made good" and wishes to become a permanent resident, but he is unable to bring out his wife and child from Home.

The man and his family desired to come to New Zealand under the Government system of assisted passages, and submitted themselves for medical examination in London. The wife and child passed the doctor but the man was turned down. Undeterred, he paid his own passage to New Zealand, to try his fortune. He succeeded in securing work and he has done so well that he has determined to make his home here. He made an application to the Department for nominated passages for his wife and child, and as they had been passed "fit," he naturally thought there would be no difficulty.

The Department has informed him that under its regulations it cannot grant assisted passages to the wife and child, who, in the meantime, are forced to remain in exile. He is not able to pay the full fare for his family.

Though the man was not passed by the medical man at Home, he has been engaged in a fairly strenuous job as a boilermaker since his arrival here some months ago. The regulation under which the Department is acting evidently lays it down that where one member of a family is suffering from certain complaints the whole familv shall be prevented from sailing.
