CRUELTY IN THE COUNTRY.
I read with surprise the letters of *"A-G.kl* and others on cruelty to animals in the com* ,r T* I am extremely fond of dogs and vert sensitive to any ill-treatment of ihenj. I med for seventeen years on a sheep farm ii the liackblocks of Paglan Countv, but I cannot recall one instance of a sheep farmer or drovef ill-treating his dops. They constitute p*rt of his stock-in-trade, and it is in his interest to look after tbem well. I have known droveri often come to the kitchen for the billy of porridge for the dogs before having their own me*'I knew one drover who Lad leather covers made for a favourite to save its feet on tb€ metal roads. _\s t 0 bullocks, where I li'" e "l the north I am grazing working bullock* because the owner's farm is not so sheltered. At the first sijrii of sickness lie puts tbem her* and pays. That then* are isolated cases of cruelty I have no doubt, but vh.it we want to get at i«. the average. I'ASTORALIST.
